Choose your pathway

Where do you want to go?

Occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and aides are different roles with different education. Pick the pathway first; the qualifications follow.

Degrees, certificates and professional education

An entry-level OTD, a post-professional OTD and a PhD are different qualifications. So are an academic certificate and NBCOT certification.

Online and hybrid

Explore online and hybrid programs

210 verified programs deliver coursework online or in a hybrid format, 45 with online coursework. Entry-level OT and OTA programs still require in-person fieldwork and often labs, and an online program from a university in one state is not automatically open to students in every state. Each listing shows these separately.

Method

How listings are researched

  1. 1

    Confirm the program

Each program is found on the school’s own page with its exact award title, and checked against the accreditor’s record.

  2. 2

    Classify the pathway

Entry-level OT, OTA, post-professional, pre-OT, research and certificate programs are never mixed.

  3. 3

    Quote every fact

Each fact carries a page address and a short quote, and a script checks the quote against the live page.

  4. 4

    Keep gaps visible

Unpublished information is shown as not published. Nothing is estimated or filled in.

Questions, answered

Which programs does this directory include?

Dedicated occupational therapy and OTA programs, formally named pre-OT pathways, occupational science, post-professional programs, research degrees and relevant academic certificates in the United States. Generic health degrees with no named OT pathway, physical therapy programs and informal webinars are excluded.

Does every listed degree lead to a license?

No. Accreditation covers a specific program, NBCOT certification applies to a person, and licensure is set by each state. A degree alone does not grant a license, and admission does not guarantee eligibility. See the accreditation guide.

What is the difference between OT, OTA and an OT aide?

Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants are separate professional roles with separate education. An OT aide is a support role, and aide training is not preparation for either profession.

Is an online OT or OTA program fully online?

Coursework may be online, but entry-level programs include fieldwork and often labs in person. Every listing shows coursework delivery, campus attendance and in-person requirements separately.

Are the “Best” selections official rankings?

No. They are unranked editorial selections built from stated criteria and dated sources. Sponsorship cannot buy a place in them.

Is every state fully covered?

No. All 50 states and Washington, DC are in scope, but research proceeds in batches. Each state page shows its research status, and “no verified program found” never means none exists.

For schools

Reach prospective OT and OTA students

Listings are free and factual. Schools can submit a missing program, claim a profile, request a correction, or sponsor a clearly labeled placement. Sponsorship never affects verification or editorial selections.
